Each week the MTSC staff will pick out their favorite figures.

June 02-09, 2008

It's that time of year again, the Stanley Cup Payoffs, this year matching the Pittsburgh Penguins against our very own Detroit Red Wings. In honor of that glorious and elusive sporting trophy we bring you these classic, plastic hockey players from Lido. Formed in 1947 by Seymour & Effrem Arenstein (the nephews of William Shaland, the biggest importer of toys in the country), Lido first produced these toys in the early ’50s. Eight figures sold for 29¢ in the day and came in five rock-’em, sock-’em poses in white, gray, blue and red. These “unbreakable” bruisers are displayed on their original three-color backer-card, held down with modern rubber bands.
