Painting Scenics Made EZ
and CHEAP!

Primer is Your Friend

The whole purpose of this exercise is to produce a great looking piece that’s easy and inexpensive. Probably your biggest outlay is going to be the scenic itself. Here we have a piece from Hudson & Allen’s Scottish Highlands Village. H & A makes great stuff with lots of detail. (The more detail in the sculpt means the less painting you’ll have to do.)

Start with three basic primers. We suggest auto primers (they’re cheap) in black, sand (tan) and brown. Hold your piece upsidedown and lightly spray black primer from above. This will put the black color in the underside cracks and crevices (where the shadows will be when the piece is turned right-side-up).

This is what it will look like after your quick spray of black.

Dust with a sand color from above especially on any stone or rock.

Dust with a brown on the roofs and any exposed earth.

This is what you piece will look like with just a few quick sprays.
