| During the early stages of World War II, from its onset in 1939 until 1941, the Luftwaffe employed a distinctive three-color camouflage scheme for its fleet of fighters and bombers. For the upper surfaces of the aircraft, the Luftwaffe used RLM 02 Grau and RLM 71 Grün. On the lower surfaces and sides of the fuselage, RLM 65 Hellblau was used. This light blue tone helped minimize the visibility of the aircraft against the sky when viewed from below. The application of this camouflage scheme was widespread among various iconic Luftwaffe aircraft including the Messerschmitt Bf 109, the primary fighter, and the Junkers Ju 88, a versatile bomber used for both tactical and strategic bombing missions.
