A consummate student, MacArthur was valedictorian at the West Texas Military Academy and graduated top of the class at West Point, in 1903. During World War I, he rose to the rank of brigadier general. He had a long relationship with he Philippines including the appointment of Field Marshal of the Philippine Army.
