British 43rd Regiment of Foot Casualty Falling, 1870 Flintlock muskets were the mainstay of European armies between 1660 and 1840. Typically, these muzzle-loading smoothbore long guns were loaded with a round lead ball, or a mixture of ball with several large shot (called buck and ball), and had an effective range of about 100 yards. The caliber of the ball was anywhere from .69/17.5mm to .80/20mm
