Youngest son of a Union Civil War General and Medal of Honor recipient, Douglas MacArthur was himself nominated for the Medal of Honor three times (he was awarded the medal in 1945). A consummate student, MacArthur was valedictorian at the West Texas Military Academy and graduated top of the class at West Point, in 1903. During World War I, he rose to the rank of brigadier general. He had a long relationship with he Philippines including the appointment of Field Marshal of the Philippine Army. It was in the Philippines during WWII where he realized his highest rewards but not before suffering his greatest setbacks. In 1945 he achieved the rank of 5-star General and on 2 September accepted the formal Japanese surrender aboard the battleship USS Missouri. |
